"Intimate Figure, Shared Vision" October Solo Show
If you are wondering why haven't I posted any new paintings lately its because I've been working all the time on my solo show, these are few images that will be on display October 1 - 31 at Ellis Nicholson Gallery in Charleston, SC, up to 15 pieces, mostly figurative as you notice, the reception will be on Friday the 7th, 5-8pm, the paintings come in deep 3 inch frames, for inquiries please contact the Gallery.

"Sidewalk shadows" 5x7 LA Urban Plein Air Landscape painting

I did this small study on the hot sidewalks of West La, you would think that there won't be much activity on Sunday but you'd be wrong, occasionally dog walkers were blocking my view cause there's plenty of them but I was able to pull off a quick study before the day ended.

"2:36pm" 6x8 Urban landscape with a female figure Oil painting

I started this painting earlier but it needed more work since there was a lot going on in the background, there's some palette knife on the left that was needed to make an even bigger contrast distinction between the lights and the darks, direct sunlight creates dramatic play between these polarities, so around this particular time is the result that came to life in form of a painting.

"Peach in purple" floral still life
Before I actually compose the still life I like to visualize it, in this case it was mostly color combinations, I like to have an idea what its gonna look like prior to the actual object arrangement, the only thing that wouldn't agree to that was the actual peach, it would just not sit still, you'd think it should just stay flat on the table but no..., its like a sitter that likes to move a lot, I fixated it between the foldings and it seemed to work!

"Red cover" 6x8 Female nude and article in Professional Artist magazine
Here's a new nude from last night, it has a nice color play throughout the painting, when figuring out the composition I try to focus on the things that 'matter' and leave the other objects within the interior of secondary importance.

"Brass cup with a rose"
Haven't really painted a still life in a while so I decided to do one yesterday, I had this small antique cup that I used for the setup and I put the flower over it for a more organic effect, I don't really like when the still life is too 'properly' arranged.

I really like these Robert Simmons Signet brushes that I just started using, they're great for applying heavier strokes of paint and they're also very flexible, for the middle values and transitions I usually use a mongoose brush, so I balance between the two, mostly flats though...

I've set it this as a still life prop for one of my paintings classes that I teach, since I knew the flower's not gonna last long I thought I should take advantage of that and do some painting before it withers.A basic color palette was used, yellow, red and blue + white, it gives plenty of color options plus a better cohesion between the colors then a regular full color palette, it was great that I was able to preserve at least the image of the flower since the next morning it was totally gone.

These urban scenes always catch my eye for the different color temperatures and the combination of organic shapes and man made structures, straight lines versus the natural curves.

It's fascinating how direct sunlight reveals everything about us leaving very little hidden in the back alley of the subconscious, the source of life envelopes and animates multitude living forms at the same time and breathes as one single unit.
