This mushroom was actualy picked up straight from the ground instead of being purchased at the local grocery store, there are still pieces of the soil on the bottom of the stem, no mushrooms were digested during the making of this painting, just the regular fumes from the oil:)
Turbulence

Since I'm not posting a daily painting today I decided to display this larger painting that I did a while ago, there's a certain tension in the composition that's between the figure and the space around it and it kinda gives a surreal quality to it, still the execution is very painterly and loose as I would want it to be, the pose is static but there's still movement that's conveyed throughout the painting in a diagonal direction.

My main goal in this painting was movement and light, I think the flow of traffic is a good subject for this particular idea since its constantly moving, the gas from the cars creates hazines around them and I always get the same question in my head when I observe this kind of a scene, ...where are we going?

Since I did a couple of preliminary drawings on the same subject I decided to do the Old Man's face in oil, the work was done in alla prima style and I was trying to keep the same spontaneity of the drawing but in a painterly manner.

I was going for a more symbolic statement with this piece, a white rose usually means innocence and purity, I think this embodied in the female figure represents that idea very well, in the background I wanted to create an etherial mood that brings lightness to the composition.

I wanted to combine the static sitting pose of the old man with the constantly moving reflections of the day that bounce off the various types of surfaces and make abstract patterns of light and value.

No, this is not an actual paint tube that the famous painter Rembrandt used, "Rembrandt" is the brandname of this oil color, its a cadmium red purple and obviously it has been used, not in this painting though, only as a still life prop:)

Painting Urban Landscapes is a specific experience, not like painting usual landscape since you can feel the air and aroma of the city, I was painting this one on location in L.A. alley trying to follow the constantly moving shadows from the houses and small buildings, their shape and lenght is changing according to the sun's movement making my job much harder, this scene is a close up of an alley that connects one of the streets in L.A.

I like how the strong red color of the plum communicates with the white bottle and the design on it, making it the focal point of the composition, as always, it was painted from life, I was tempted to eat the plum many times while painting but I had to control myself since by doing that a valuable prop will be gone.

Ok...so doing a self portrait with soft pastels is not that easy, especially when the size is small and you are trying to do some details with the edge of the pastels, whats even worse the pastel itself crumbles in your hand and dissapears in small pieces of dust, so this is the result of my struggle with this medium and yes I was looking at myself in a mirror, I hate photos (especially Vacation photos).

This composition deals with the reflective surface of the silver ball and the intense color and softness of the flower, I think that when combined together they bring something unique in this piece, I still tried to keep my painterly approach here even though parts of the object demanded a more 'strict' finish.
